Dent Devils’ Tips on How to Protect Your Car from the Cold This Winter
With temperatures set to become even colder over the coming weeks, stomach it’s important to be prepared for freezing temperatures and be aware of the effects the cold can have on your car. Just a few minutes of preparation can save you a lot of hassle further along the line. So here are just a few tips to help prepare your vehicle for the cold this winter.
It is usually recommended to keep your fuel tank as full as possible during the winter. Of course it is always handy to have plenty of petrol to prevent getting stuck on the side of the road, but it can also help to protect your engine. When your tank is low, condensation can form on the inside of the tank and drip into the fuel. If water gets into the lines, it could freeze and prevent the flow of fuel to the engine.
Check all moving parts
A decrease in temperature poses a risk for the moving parts of your vehicle. Oil gets thicker with colder weather, filters and heating systems face additional stress and tyres can contract, causing them to lose traction. It’s important to ensure you change your oil, check the running of your heater and fill your tyres to the recommended level.
Wipers and windscreen wash
If your washer fluid is low, now is a good time to replace it before the really cold weather kicks in. Ensure you find de-icing windscreen wash and new wiper blades to help you maintain visibility.
Check your battery
This is one of the most commonly overlooked aspects in many vehicles. Checking your battery life will help to keep track of how low the mercury level can drop before the battery is in danger.
During the cold winter months it’s vital to make sure your vehicle is prepared. With icy and possibly even snowy conditions in some areas of the country, it is important to take great care on the roads and only travel on gritted road surfaces.
